Four steps to your marriage certificate

Every couple's situation is different, so the exact timing can vary. These are the four stages most couples go through.

Step 1

Consultation

Talk through your situation, your marriage route, and which documents may apply.

Step 2

Documents and notice

Gather your documents and file the notice of intended marriage with the registrar.

Step 3

30-day notice period

A statutory notice period follows, during which objections may be raised.

Step 4

Marriage and certificate

The marriage is solemnised and the certificate is issued once the process is complete.

Documents to prepare

Most couples need the core set below. Your advocate will confirm the exact list for your case.

Photographs

8 passport-size photos of each partner.

Address and age proof

Proof of residential address and proof of age for each partner.

Two adult witnesses

Two adult witnesses who will sign the notice and attend the marriage.

Additional documents for specific cases

Divorcees and widows may need divorce or death documents. Foreign citizens may need a passport and valid visa, plus a no-objection or equivalent certificate from their embassy.
